1. Purpose

This policy outlines how we safeguard and promote the welfare of all children attending our classes. We are committed to ensuring a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers.

2. Legal Framework

This policy is informed by:

  • Children Act 1989 and Children Act 2004

  • Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018, updated)

  • Guidance from the NSPCC

3. Our Commitment

We will:

  • Put the child’s welfare first at all times

  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment

  • Work in partnership with parents and carers

  • Act promptly on any safeguarding concerns

4. Roles & Responsibilities

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL):

  • Name: Kath Smith

  • Responsible for handling concerns and liaising with external agencies

All staff/instructors will:

  • Be familiar with this policy

  • Maintain professional boundaries

·       Be DBS checked and complete regular risk assessment of venues

5. Safer Working Practice in Massage / Reflexology Classes

Because the classes involve touch:

  • Parents/carers always carry out the massage on their own child

  • Instructors demonstrate techniques on a doll only

  • No instructor will massage a child

  • Consent is emphasised: parents / carers are encouraged to follow their baby or toddlers’ cues

6. Supervision & Environment

  • Children must remain under the supervision of their parent/carer at all times

  • Class spaces will be safe, clean, and suitable for infants

  • Attendance registers are kept for each session

7. Recognising Concerns

Staff should be alert to:

  • Unusual injuries or marks

  • Changes in behaviour (child or parent interaction)

  • Signs of neglect or distress

Guidance from the NSPCC should be followed.

8. Responding to Concerns

If a concern arises:

  1. Record factual observations (date, time, what was seen/heard) in line with GDPR

  2. Report immediately to the DSL

  3. The DSL will decide next steps, which may including contacting:

Important: Do not investigate or question parents directly.

9. Confidentiality

  • Information will be shared only on a need-to-know basis, in line with GDPR

  • Safeguarding concerns override confidentiality where necessary

10. Allegations Against Staff

If an allegation is made against the instructor:

  • Contact the NSPCC Whistleblowing Helpline: 0800 028 0285

  • Contact the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO)

  • Ensure the safety and welfare of children is prioritised at all times

11. Photography & Mobile Phones

  • No photography without explicit parental consent

  • Personal mobile phone use is restricted during sessions

  • Images must never be shared on personal devices

12. Health & Safety

  • Mats and equipment are cleaned between sessions

  • Any accidents or incidents are recorded

  • First aid provision is available

13. Online Safety (if applicable)

For virtual classes:

  • Secure platforms are used

  • Sessions are not recorded without consent

  • Parents supervise children throughout

14. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or in line with updated guidance from the NSPCC.
